Chapter 13

Candy sighed in contentment. This was how she wanted to start every day. The fact it was Christmas morning only made waking up in her firefighter’s arms that much more special. The petite blonde was reluctant to move. It was, according to the irritating red numbers, almost six in the morning. She was supposed to be at her father’s house soon. Her family held nothing on the sensations flowing through her body.

While the motorcycle helmet was an amazing gift, the best Christmas present she had ever received was being Kathy’s girlfriend. Only a month after they had met, her firefighter had come further than she would have thought possible. Candy chuckled as softly as she could at the familiar feeling at her feet. Rocket had taken to lying across the end of the bed so he could be touching both his moms.

Having a girlfriend that owned a pet was something she had never expected. Yet it was something she would not change for anything. Having Kathy in her life was already an instant family. One day her firefighter could return her feelings. She knew Rocket was already in love with her. Giving him scraps here and there when he was over or when she helped care for him at the fire station helped her cause.

Now she had to remain patient as she continued to woo his mom. Woo? That was an interesting way to term what she was doing with Kathy. It wasn’t so much about being romantic with her firefighter, though she wanted that too. It was more about being patient enough until Kathy was ready to love. Something Candy had learned a long time ago was that the best things in life were worth waiting for.

Her mother had taught her that lesson a long time ago. It was when she was about four when Angel had made certain they knew where their birthday or Christmas presents were hidden. Being that young, Candy had had to search through the presents. When it was time to open them for real, it had been greatly disappointing. It wasn’t much of a lesson, but it was one that had stuck with the young woman for life.

Perhaps that was why she would continue to be as patient as possible. There was only one person she was not going to be as patient with. And yet, Candy was hesitant to end a friendship that had lasted over twenty years. Though she was nearly consumed with thoughts and hopes for her relationship with Kathy, Sammy had not been far from her thoughts.

Candy shoved those thoughts from her mind, for now. Before she did, she vowed she was not going to give up on Sammy. That would be the easy way out. Kathy would hopefully understand the need to stand by her friend. So many things were going wrong for the chef, the last thing she needed was for her best friend to give up on her. The thought of not giving up on her friendship warmed her on the inside.
